Haven’t been around here for aaaaages!
In simple terms, this movie is basically a metaphor for married life.
There seems to me a discord between Rosamund Pike’s version and Ben Affleck’s, in that the later is a bumbling fool trying to play catch up, both in plot and in acting prowess.
One character tells a haunting, surreal mid-western mystery, and the other, just another typical block-buster thriller. It doesn’t bother me so much, as the husband is supposed to be the one on the back leg. I just wished the entire movie left more questions unanswered, to really dig into that eerie feeling.
(Interestingly I read some weekend magazine article last week, an interview with a successful older lady, who quotes, men are simple, and a smart woman will always run circles around a smart man. May this be true forever and ever.)
The realism in the filming of this movie was superb, real people, no make up. The mother and sister were especially fantastic. However despite trying to be realistic as possible FILMING the movie (following same actors for X many yrs, etc), the plot seemed quite contrived. I mean, where is the version where he becomes a useless bum on the street? Why is he vindicated at the end? Spewing pretentious BS nonsense, and ending up with the hot / sweet dancer girl. OMG. I feel quite worked up now. I hate unnecessarily happy endings unless they suit some purpose.
Surprisingly thought provoking, had its sad moments and its funny moments, Tom Hardy is pretty great. If you didn’t know, the whole movie is about concrete, concrete is VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS.
Waiting to see: The Drop, Interstellar, Nightcrawler, Mad Max
Given how many great movies there were in last yrs batch, the 2013/14 pool seems abysmal.
Apart from being HIGHLY distracted with day to day issues… ‘getting old’ as they say… and having poor retention of half the things I’ve seen, I think the year has just been very disappointing overall.
- Michael Fassbender in 3 hrs of staged tragedy
- Gravity sans Sandra Bullock’s vacant shell
- Benedict Cumberbatch’s voice of doom
- Only God Forgives
- The Counselor
- Joaquin Phoenix getting it on with a Scarlett Johannson’s voice?
Most anticipated / Most disappointing / Most meh
- Only God Forgives
- Place Beyond the Pines
- The Counselor
- Blue Jasmine
- Wolf of Wall St
- Everything but Fassy
- Jared Leto’s phoniness
- Pacific Rim
Most memorable scenes.
I think either:
A. I have a memory problem
B. Everything this yr was mediocre and nothing stuck
12 Yrs of Staged Tragedy: Fassy being a total badass
Gravity: The beautiful serenity / haunting severity of space…
Most anticipated 2013/2014
- I am not even going to hope for Mad Max
- Hey, what happened to Silence?
12 yrs lacks the grittiness of a typical Mcqueen film. So much of it seemed pared back.. black/white, good/evil, staged - how is it possible that the guys who duped Solomon did not seem utterly FAKE? And him coming home to a family all lined up emotionlessly to see him… Nah.. I don’t buy it. The only character to have any real human ‘shades’ was the Fass. This is not to discredit Chiwetel, who does a fine job but only needs to play a sad guy. Fassy shows a twisting of the psyche, beyond what we normally recognise as humane, to something cruel, sinister, but also devastatingly sad. What was the point of Brad Pitt, other than to show his face and say some enlightened white man savior philosophical BS?
Fassy, on how he justifies his left of middle characters:
'Well I don't have to justify them. I just have to understand them. They are what they are. I am not out there to judge or to beat a moral drum…'
In conclusion, Jared Leto please…. just go home and give up your prancing about.
…… so my life just went from a let-me-die nightmare.. to omg-amazing in one month……
the world is pretty funny……………………..
omg im seeing prof. brian cox live! *hearts*
place beyond the pines:
despite trying to draw deep conceptual links… the film is entirely predictable and therefore, feels superficial in its messages. beautiful cinematography as to be expected, but whereas blue valentine achieved so much by saying so little (heart wrenching, heart felt).. this one seems completely bloated, yet fails to really dig into your core to say anything at all. god. does that even make sense.
personally i thought it was true to the book. i will get stoned for that previous sentence. will baz ever deliver again? will leo ever not seem like a huge douche again? he seems to always be playing some kind of caricature of himself?
worth it just to perv all over 2 hrs worth of henry cavill’s gq blue steel
exceeded my low expectations, and therefore, i have nothing to complain about. enjoyed the pseudo science, seems plausible, and thus appeals to my nerd side, which likes being pleased. why did brad pitt have that ridiculous rag piece of hipster scarf around his neck in the beginning? sif that would stay on while madly escaping a zombie attack?
so.. randomly… i saw this. boring if not for the last scene… which cleverly links back to the title. wont say more than that in fear of spoilers.
cant wait for only god forgives!!! ZOMG - finally.. FINALLY getting its aussie release in 2 weeks… woop!
..my life.. sense it does not make…
